The Electric Trolling Motors and their Applications

The electrical or electronic trolling motors are used in boats for its operation. These motors are the main source of generating the thrust force for the boats. When these motors are compared to the combustion engines, they have some advantages and disadvantages. Everyone must be aware of these pros and cons before having such motors in their boats.

The Pros

There are different benefits of the trolling motors. The first and foremost benefit of these motors is that the propulsion process is quite. Numerous of the fish and other water species are afraid of the noise. When compared to the traditional engine propellers, these have almost zero noise. For those who are fond of fishing, these motors are like a miracle. With no noise in water such people can catch abundant fish. These motors are electric which are always running and have no need for them to turn on. The idle power of these motors is almost zero as high technology based MOSFET and other transistors are used in its manufacturing. Therefore, these motors are best suited even if you have numerous of electrical and electronic gadgets in your boat. The output of these motors is often limited because these are based on modern technology. These motors are quite light weighted and have compact size therefore, making its movement quite easy. Such motors are very easy to maintain and their maintenance cost is low.

The cons

There are some cons of these motors. One of the main drawback of such motors is that the batteries required for its operation are quite heavy. These batteries are very hard to move and require a long period to get completely charged. The batteries required for the operation of such motors are often too costly and hard to find in the local market. The operation of such engine is halted when the boat is caught in ropes, seaweed, and nets etc. The propellers are damaged in such situation until and unless the safety pins of the propellers are sliced off. The motors when operated by electrical power, will release a surge current in such situations which might destroy the entire motor.

The Protection Circuit

There is a protection circuit in such motors in case when boat get stuck in seaweed, nets, or ropes. Such a circuit is known as the circuit breaker. When the electrical system of the boat is about to release the surge current, the circuit breaker comes in its role. The circuit breaker is ON when the maximum amount of current or voltage is flowing across the motor. When such flow of voltage or current happens, the circuit breaker break the connection of motor with batteries, saving the moto from damage.

The amount of Current needed

The modern batteries which are known as the deep cycle marine batteries are able to fulfill the high voltage and current requirements of the boat. Such deep cycled marine batteries can deliver an insane amount of 1000 or more amperes when needed. But such a huge amount of current are a sure way of damaging the motor circuitry. Therefore, there must be a circuit breaker in the connection with motor.
